Project Evolution
Section titled “Project Evolution”The idea began as a reaction to the shortcomings of existing social networks for children: too little data protection, hardly any parental control, and a lack of child-friendly, playful UX. Over the course of the discussion, the concept was repeatedly refined: from a classic social media platform to a mix of a closed parent-child network, digital board game, and learning platform. Key pivots included the consistent invitation chain via parents, full moderatability by parents, and the omission of public profiles. Many existing community models were deemed unsuitable due to GDPR and moderation effort.
Project Genesis & Motivation
Section titled “Project Genesis & Motivation”The motivation arose from the desire to offer children a safe, creative, and socially beneficial digital space—as a real alternative to Facebook, Instagram & Co. Inspirations included board games, MMOs, and the observation that parents want more control and transparency. The idea was further fueled by the closure of many German children’s communities (e.g., Seitenstark, Helles-Köpfchen) and the challenges of the GDPR.
Project Overview
Section titled “Project Overview”The project is a closed, parent-centered social network for children. The goal is to provide children with a playful, safe, and privacy-friendly space for communication, creativity, and learning. The target group is families with elementary school children who value data protection and parental control.

Design Decisions & Rationale
Section titled “Design Decisions & Rationale”- Parents as gatekeepers: Maximum security and trust, as only known families have access. Alternative (open registration) was rejected due to risk of abuse.
- Invitation chain: Peer-to-peer-like network to prevent unauthorized access.
- Granular rights: Parents can individually determine what their child is allowed to do. Alternative (rigid age levels) was rejected as too inflexible.
- Virtual world instead of classic timeline: To avoid social media feeling and create more room for creativity.
- No advertising/data sharing: Data protection as a USP, as many parents see this as the main criticism of existing platforms.

Section titled “Personal/Inspirational Details”The idea is inspired by board games, MMOs, and personal experiences with children in the digital space. The regional roots (Germany/Europe) and the desire for an alternative to US platforms shape the concept. The vision is a “digital playground” that combines fun, learning, and safety.

Recommendation / Practical Proposal for Your Child-Friendly Network
Section titled “Recommendation / Practical Proposal for Your Child-Friendly Network”Since data protection/parental trust is central to your product, I recommend a hybrid EU-first strategy:
- Hosting & Storage in the EU (Hetzner / Scaleway / OVH) — for app servers + object storage (images/videos). Cost-efficient, EU data residency.
- Identity: Use Keycloak or authentik (self-hosted in the EU) or a managed Keycloak partner in the EU if you want less ops work. This keeps sensitive parent/child identity in the EU.
- Realtime/Video: For 1:1 or small groups, Jitsi self-host (EU server) — good privacy/costs. For large scaling, later evaluate a European video SaaS.
- SMS/Phone: MessageBird (EU) for verification/invitations — EU HQ, good coverage.
- Analytics: Matomo (self-hosted) or Plausible — this avoids GA data collection and increases trust.
- CDN/Edge: Regional CDN (BunnyCDN / OVH CDN) + optionally Cloudflare with EU-localization (if features are needed).
Why hybrid? You get cost-efficient EU data residency + off-the-shelf services (e.g., MessageBird) for global tasks without US data transfer. At the same time, you save long-term on egress/variable API costs and gain trust with parents/institutions (schools, authorities).
Risks & Concrete Countermeasures
Section titled “Risks & Concrete Countermeasures”- Ops/Scaling: Managed Keycloak + Managed DB (Postgres) can initially increase costs but reduce outage risk.
- Egress costs for object storage: Caching/resizing, CDN, and transcoding for mobile clients reduce egress.
